Research

I am going to conduct research into academic sources that I can use to formulate my title and use for sources to prove that point -

Academic Sources:

Evolution of a Filmmaker -

https://dspace.mit.edu/handle/1721.1/72229#?
 (http://eds.a.ebscohost.com/eds/detail/detail?vid=18&sid=b6ed2027-9b87-442c-87c6-6f718f4afff2%40sdc-v-sessmgr02&bdata=JkF1dGhUeXBlPXNoaWImc2l0ZT1lZHMtbGl2ZQ%3d%3d#AN=edsndl.oai.union.ndltd.org.MIT.oai.dspace.mit.edu.1721.1.72229&db=edsndl)

This source is very credible as it was published by Massachusetts institute of technology. The issue with the source is that it was published in 1980 which dates back many years so the information may not be relevant for current times. Outdated information will not support my points as well.

Philosophical view of multiculturalism in modern European cinematography -

Yulia V. Nikolaeva et al. (2018) ‘Philosophical view of multiculturalism in modern European cinematography’. doi: 10.5281/zenodo.1472151.

This section of the article provides the work from Yulia V. Nikolaeva which gives a lot of information on the basis of films moving between international countries. This sources advantages gives a large amount of information in a consice paragraph. The only issue the focus upon europe as a whole instead of venturing into singular counties and their film aspects.

Mamdouh Mohamed, Khaled Awes and Wael Anany (2019) ‘The Impact of the Technological Development of Digital Processing and Presentation Methods on the Creative Aspects of Cinematography’, Journal of Architecture, Art & Humanistic Science, (18), p. 573. doi: 10.21608/mjaf.2019.11656.1101.

This source gives detail on the change between analog and digital film but it focusses mainly on 3D use. With this source it lacks development in detail on how other creative aspects have changed. It gives a small amount of information on several different aspects providing a weaker statement.

Mast, F. et al. (2016) ‘As Film Goes Byte: The Change From Analog to Digital Film Perception’. doi: 10.7892/boris.85005.

This source has shows me the main difference in analg and digital film perception which is a key development in technology which allowed for techniques to begin advancement. An advantage would be how the source focusses on 3D camera rigs which is a tecnhological development I would be interested in researching and using. A disadvantage would be how the source is it lacks in detail concerning the digital development and what were its major impacts on the film industry.

Ariel (2013) Cinematic Appeals : The Experience of New Movie Technologies. New York: Columbia University Press (Film and Culture). Available at: http://search.ebscohost.com/login.aspx?direct=true&AuthType=shib&db=nlebk&AN=663353&site=eds-live (Accessed: 5 February 2020).

The source above is a whole published book which is accessible through several websites that allow me to skim read through pages and pick out key information. It is very useful due to its amount of information. The issue is how the book gives brief oversight on old movie technologies which is a key aspect I am going to be going in detail on.

Thomas Elsaesser (2009) ‘Between Erlebnis and Erfahrung: Cinema Experience with Benjamin’, Paragraph, 32(3), p. 292. Available at: http://search.ebscohost.com/login.aspx?direct=true&AuthType=shib&db=edsjsr&AN=edsjsr.43151783&site=eds-live (Accessed: 5 February 2020).

This source above provides a small amount of insight to cinema experience in a singular paragraph. It gives detail into how we percieve media and is possible to relate to critical perspectives in new creative film methods. The source is easily accessible online.

The Revolution In Cinematography Post Production And Distribution - Brian Mckernan

This source provides me with a large amount of information based around cinematography and camera rigs. It also highlights post production which I will use for the talk about editing digitally and editing film reel. These past techniques are what I want to talk about as post production is a key aspect of film making.

The Impact of technology on the Film industry
info (https://cbcommunity.comcast.com/Community/browse-all/details/the-impact-of-technology-in-the-film-industry)

Article - (https://cbcommunity.comcast.com/Community/docs/default-source/default-document-library/cb-film-then-and-now-infographic.pdf?sfvrsn=2c913fd4_2)

This source gives me a lot of valuable information on how cinematography has changed through the years. It is showing a lot of information on how cinematography was used in the past. I can use a lot of this information to develop my knowledge of past techniques, Outlining the camera rigs and their change.

Side by Side Documentary - Christopher Kenneally
https://www.imdb.com/title/tt2014338/
Side by Side. (2012). [DVD] Directed by C. Kenneally. United States: Company Films.
This source is in moving image form and delves deep into directors view upon the change in film and its development. It provides a wealth of information on the change and how it has effected cinema and the industry. This source is very credible as the information I could quote is taken from titles such as 'Directors and producers'. It is easily accessible online to watch freely and allows me to playback sections of the documentary for quoting purposes.

As I am looking deeper Into Cinematography throughout the years it is what I want to keep as my main aspect for my question.

My main direction that I want to have for my question is about technology and how film has developed from it. After researching into cinema experience I was attempting to create a correlation between cinema experience and cinematography but there are several other factors that play into cinema experience. There are not a lot of sources providing the exact information I need to by diverting the technology of cinema and that experience I am going to look into the technology of film making. The correlation is now between technological development and film development (techniques). There are several sources on this and I can look into the question ideas now.

Possible Question Ideas:

  • To what extent has the development of technology allowed film techniques to advance
  • Has the development of technology majorly changed film cinematography techniques

Sources : Rope (film)
American Cinematographer
A trip to the moon
Side by Side (documentary)

Rough Structure of my Essay:

Firstly I need to outline all subject areas that I am going to cover within the answering of the question.
  • The changes of camera rigs - how they limited cinematography
  • Sets - Mise-en-scene (green-screen) VFX - how the use of special effects has allowed development in film (visuals, CGI)
  • Digital processing vs film - ease of filming and what they mean during edits. Film is very sensitive to light and can suffer from it. Digital is stored easier and for compatible with environments
  • How has the technology developed (who created digital?, CGI, 3D, etc). - By finding what times they were developed and by who then I can draw links with other developments in cinematography.
  • Directors style - How they adapted to the change in film technology and use it to create films now
Why I am going to use these subtopics in my essay?

To include directors within the question then I have a lot of access to interviews they have done where they explain their work. Also I can look into some of the biggest cinematographers such as Roger Deakins.

Mise-en-scene can outline the lighting, costumes, etc. The use of mise-en-scene development can outline how genre has developed which I may touch on.

CGI - computer generator imagery in the past was no where as developed as it is today.

Editing - How digital editing is such an ease compared to old techniques of cutting film physically, creating green screen effects digitally vs. using film.

The title I have settled on ;

To what extent has the development in technology allowed film techniques to advance

I have settled on discussing filming techniques compared to cinematography as with cinematography it only allows me to talk about camera's in themselves and how they work with other aspects of the film industry in the past but if I was to go in detail of it then it would be irrelevant to the title.

Structure
